He rushes into town, and finds the “House of Evil” store. It’s Bart’s birthday, but homer has forgotten to get him a gift. I might as well tell you how the Simpsons parodied this episode, much in the way they have parodied almost every episode of the Twilight Zone. Things… well, things go downhill from here. He rips the doll out of his step-daughter’s hands and shoves her away, which causes her to cry and plead with her “daddy”, to which Erich responds “I’m not your father!” What an ass! Well, he tries to destroy the doll by crushing it, and then by attempting to cut its head off with a circular saw, but it’s too strong for the blade and the weakening mind of the neurotic mess of Erich. I’m Talky Tina, and i’m going to kill you.” Cool! He throws the doll away, but somehow ends up back in bed next to Christie. The dolls speaks her one and only phrase: “I’m Talky Tina, and I love you.” During an angry conversation between the parents, Erich says what has clearly been on their mind for some time: “I don’t love Christie, because I don’t love any child, because we can’t have any and i’m just her stepfather.” Alone with the doll, the doll tells Erich “I’m Talky Tina, and I don’t like you. Once they enter, Erich demands to see the box, and becomes angry with both Christie for wanting the doll and Annabelle for buying it for her. As Mother and daughter return home from a shopping trip, Annabelle tells Christie that she shouldn’t show daddy her new toy. This ensemble creates the sinister tone appropriate for the episode’s mood.Įrich, as i’ve said before, is a jerk. The composition consists of a solo bass clarinet, flourished by harps and celesta. Bernard Herrmann composed the music to be just as dark as the characters in the show. “Living Doll” is the 6th episode of season 5, and aired on November 1st, 1963. He is a horrible jerk who you just can’t feel pity for, but damn if he isn’t entertaining. Telly Savalas plays this total asshole, Erich Streator, Mary LaRoche (who played Mary in “A World of His Own”) plays his suffering wife Annabelle, and Tracy Stratford (Who played Tina in “Little Girl Lost”) plays Christie, the easy to love daughter of Annabelle, and stepdaughter of Erich. Charles Beaumont and Jerry Sohl wrote this dark story, and it stands as one of the creepiest of the whole series, and this creep factor comes from more than just the talking doll.
